چکیده

Black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon is one of the major shrimp species being cultured in Asian countries. Disease outbreaks have resulted in a decline of P. monodon cultivation and severe losses in the shrimp production. To combat harmful microorganisms, shrimp produce diverse classes of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) as part of their immune defense. In P. monodon, several cDNA sequences of AMPs were identified by means of expressed sequence tag (EST) approach. These DNA sequences encode different putative AMPs, such as crustins, penaeidins, anti-lipopolysaccharide factors (ALFs) and lysozymes. In this review, we present the recent information on sequence diversity, expression and antimicrobial properties of P. monodon AMPs. The information indicates the importance of these AMPs as the effective host defense molecules against the invasion of pathogenic

Immunomodulatory effects of seagrass Halophila ovalis polysaccharide mixed feed in adult black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon and its protective efficacy against white spot syndrome virus infection

As white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) can be highly pathogenic in penaeid shrimp, various feed supplements have been tested to help to protect farmed shrimp against WSSV disease. Here a polysaccharide extract from Halophila ovalis (HO) seagrass was added to feeds at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g[a1] /kg to assess its ability to protect Black Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) against WSSV ch...

Prevalence of Multiple Drug Resistant Pathogenic Bacteria in Cultured Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon Fabricius)

The shrimp sector is the second largest export earner for Bangladesh, which is a major contributor in the national economy of Bangladesh. It also provides millions of employment. Every year a huge amount of shrimps are rejected to export due to its pathogenic bacterial contamination. A comparative study regarding prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogenic bacteria in the black ti...

Genomic structure, expression pattern, and functional characterization of transcription factor E2F-2 from black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)

Transcription factor E2F-2 is a regulator of cell cycle. Researchers identified E2F-2 genes from yeasts to humans, but few reports investigated E2F-2 gene from black tiger shrimp. In the present study, we cloned E2F-2 gene from black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Full-length PmE2F-2 complementary DNA sequence measures 3,189 bp with an open reading frame of 1,371 bp. Complete PmE2F-2 genomic s...

Reduction of Bacterial Pathogens in Penaeus monodon and Macrobrachium rosenbergii Using Several Chemical Interventions

A study was undertaken to determine the most effective element among the commonly used antimicrobial agents, especially in the body muscle of black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) on the basis of different chemical interventions. Using 10 ppm calcium hypochlorite, the microbial load has been reduced more significantly (p>0.001) than trisodiu...
